Educating the Whole Child:
Mind, Body and Spirit.
Choir
Students in grades 3-8th meet once a week at St. Joseph Catholic School to focus on vocal training and choir direction from Mrs. Carol Schlitt, one of our parishioners. Mrs. Schlitt also helps to prepare any student interested in cantoring. Students sing and/or cantor during weekday school Masses. K-2nd graders have choir practice twice a month and sing in Mass periodically. (Mrs. Schlitt is pictured to the left during 3rd-8th choir practice)
Cooking
Students focus on using classroom skills and applying them in the kitchen. Students use measuring skills, discuss compound mixtures, and more. Each recipe is tied to an upcoming holiday theme, monthly celebration, or class topic. (picture to the left)
DARE
Drug Abuse Resistance Education is a national substance abuse prevention education program that seeks to prevent use of controlled substances, membership in gangs, and violent behavior. The Freeburg Police Department provides an officer to teach this course to our middle school students.
Spanish
Students in PreK3 through 8th grade participate in Spanish class once a week. Students focus on pronunciation and vocabulary building, greetings, common conversational pieces, how to order food, prayers, songs, and much more. (Picture to the left)
Woodshop
Upper grade students are provided an opportunity to partake in Woodshop class. Students learn woodworking skills such as sanding, painting, craftsmanship, and the use of power tools. Themed projects are created every year.
